Getting Started with AICompliant — Starter Plan Complete Guide

Welcome to AICompliant

AICompliant is your AI compliance autopilot. We automatically identify which AI regulations apply to your business, analyze gaps in your compliance, generate the tasks you need to complete, and produce the legal documents required by regulators — all tailored to your specific AI systems, jurisdictions, and industry.

This guide walks you through everything you need to know as a Starter Plan customer.

What the Starter Plan Includes

The Starter Plan ($500/month) gives you the foundational compliance infrastructure every organization using AI needs:

  • Up to 3 AI systems registered and tracked
  • All US state regulations automatically mapped to your business
  • Automated compliance scanning that identifies which laws apply to you
  • AI-generated compliance tasks — a personalized to-do list for every regulation
  • Compliance document generation (up to 20 per month) — Impact Assessments, Bias Audits, Disclosure Notices, and more
  • Real-time regulatory monitoring — scanner checks 17 sources for new laws and changes
  • Risk scoring with penalty exposure calculation
  • 14-day free trial with full access (card required upfront)

Step 1: Complete Onboarding

After signing up and completing Stripe checkout, you will be guided through the onboarding wizard:

  1. Company Profile — Enter your company name, industry, employee count, and revenue range. This information helps the compliance engine determine which regulations apply to you based on size thresholds (e.g., California SB 53 only applies to companies with $500M+ revenue).

  2. Select Your States — Choose every US state where your company operates, has employees, serves customers, or deploys AI systems. Regulations are jurisdiction-specific — if you have customers in California and employees in Maryland, you need to comply with both states' AI laws.

  3. Register AI Systems — Add each AI system your organization uses. For each system, provide:

    • Name and description (e.g., "Customer Support Chatbot", "Fraud Detection Model")
    • System type (chatbot, recommendation engine, decision-making tool, etc.)
    • Risk tier (minimal, limited, high-risk) — AICompliant will validate this against regulatory definitions
    • Deployed states — which states this specific system operates in
    • Data types processed — what personal data the system handles
    • Whether it makes consequential decisions — decisions that materially affect people (employment, credit, insurance, housing)
  4. Review and Scan — AICompliant runs its compliance engine, which:

    • Maps all applicable regulations to your organization based on your states, industry, and AI system types
    • Performs a gap analysis using Claude AI to identify what you're missing
    • Generates compliance tasks for every gap found
    • Calculates your penalty exposure based on mapped regulation penalties

Step 2: Understanding Your Dashboard

After onboarding, you land on the Compliance Overview dashboard. Here is what each metric means:

Compliance Score (0-100%)

Your overall compliance percentage across all mapped regulations. This starts at 0% because no tasks have been completed yet. As you complete tasks, this score rises. The goal is 100% — meaning you have addressed every identified compliance requirement.

Active Regulations

The number of regulations that apply to your organization. For example, if you operate in California with AI systems, you might see California AB 2013 (Training Data Transparency), California SB 942 (AI Transparency), and Maryland AI Employment Law. Each regulation has specific requirements you must meet.

AI Systems

The number of AI systems you registered during onboarding. Each system is analyzed against every applicable regulation to identify specific compliance gaps.

Open Tasks

The total number of compliance tasks generated by the gap analysis. Each task represents one specific action you need to take to become compliant. For a typical Starter Plan customer with 3 AI systems and 9 regulations, you might see 100-200 tasks.

Penalty Exposure

The maximum potential financial penalty if your organization were found non-compliant with all mapped regulations. This is calculated by summing the penalty_max from each applicable regulation. As you complete tasks and achieve compliance, your effective exposure decreases.

Step 3: Working with Compliance Tasks

Tasks are the core of AICompliant. They are your personalized compliance to-do list.

How Tasks Are Generated

When you complete onboarding (or run a gap analysis), AICompliant:

  1. Looks at each regulation mapped to your organization
  2. Examines each regulation's specific requirements
  3. Compares those requirements against your AI system configurations
  4. Uses Claude AI to identify gaps — areas where your current setup does not meet the requirement
  5. Creates a task for each gap, with a title, description, priority, deadline, and estimated effort

Task Workflow

Not Started → In Progress → Completed

  1. Triage your tasks — Go to the Tasks page and sort by priority. Focus on:

    • Critical and High priority tasks first — these represent the biggest compliance risks
    • Overdue tasks — anything past its deadline needs immediate attention
    • Tasks for effective (active) regulations — these are laws already in force vs. proposed bills
  2. Start a task — Click "Start Task" to move it to In Progress. This signals to your team that someone is actively working on it.

  3. Do the actual compliance work — Each task tells you exactly what needs to be done. For example:

    • "Implement visible disclosure for AI-generated content" means you need to add labels to your AI outputs
    • "Conduct bias audit for employment decisions" means you need to run statistical analysis on your hiring AI
    • "Document training data sources" means you need to catalog what data your AI models were trained on
  4. Update progress — Use the progress slider (0-100%) to track how far along you are. This helps your team coordinate.

  5. Mark complete — When the work is done, mark the task as completed. Your compliance score on the dashboard will increase.

  6. Generate evidence documents — For completed tasks, go to the Documents page to generate formal compliance documents that serve as proof of your compliance work.

Understanding Task Details

When you expand a task, you see:

  • Title — What needs to be done
  • Regulation — Which law requires this action
  • AI System — Which of your systems this applies to
  • Priority — Critical, High, Medium, or Low
  • Deadline — When this should be completed (based on regulation effective dates)
  • Estimated Hours — How long the compliance team should expect this to take
  • Description — Detailed explanation of the requirement and what compliance looks like

Step 4: Understanding Your Regulations

The Regulations page shows every regulation mapped to your organization.

Active vs. Upcoming

  • Active regulations are laws currently in effect. Non-compliance carries immediate risk.
  • Upcoming regulations are proposed bills or laws with future effective dates. Preparing early gives you a competitive advantage.

What Each Regulation Card Shows

  • Regulation name and jurisdiction (e.g., "California AB 2013 (Training Data)" — CA)
  • Status badge — Active (green) or Upcoming (yellow)
  • Penalty amount — Maximum fine per violation (e.g., $8K per violation)
  • Effective date — When the law takes/took effect, or "Pending" for proposed bills

Expanding a Regulation

Click any regulation to expand it and see:

  • Jurisdiction — The state or country that enacted it
  • Enforcer — Who enforces it (e.g., California Attorney General, FTC)
  • Scope — What types of AI it covers (all AI, employment AI, content AI, etc.)
  • Requirements count — How many specific requirements this regulation has

Viewing Requirements

Click "View Requirements" to see the detailed regulatory requirements. Each requirement shows:

  • Requirement code (e.g., CA-942-REQ-001)
  • Priority and complexity ratings
  • Description of what the law requires
  • Implementation guidance — step-by-step instructions for how to comply
  • Implementation steps — broken down into specific actions with time estimates
  • Evidence required — what documentation you need to prove compliance
  • Passing criteria — what "compliant" looks like for this requirement

Step 5: Generating Compliance Documents

The Documents page lets you generate AI-powered compliance documents tailored to your organization.

How It Works

  1. Click "Generate Document"
  2. The modal shows only document types relevant to your mapped regulations:
    • If you have California AB 2013 → Training Data Transparency Report
    • If you have California SB 942 → Consumer AI Disclosure
    • If you have Colorado AI Act → Impact Assessment
    • If you have NYC LL144 → Bias Audit Report
    • Board Compliance Report is always available
  3. Select a template and click Generate
  4. AICompliant uses Claude AI to generate a comprehensive, professional document customized with:
    • Your company name, industry, and profile
    • Your specific AI systems and their configurations
    • Your compliance status and identified gaps
    • Regulation-specific language and requirements
  5. The document appears in your Document Center with a Draft status

Document Lifecycle

  • Draft — Just generated, needs human review
  • In Review — Being reviewed by your compliance team
  • Approved — Ready for regulatory submission

Downloading Documents

Click any document to preview it, then download as:

  • .pdf — For submission to regulators or board presentations
  • .docx — For editing in Microsoft Word
  • .md — Raw markdown for technical teams

Every exported document includes a compliance stamp at the bottom with:

  • Your unique document control number (AIC-xxx)
  • Generation date and integrity hash
  • Status indicator (AI-GENERATED DRAFT or REVIEWED & APPROVED)
  • Disclaimer about review requirements

Document Quotas

Starter Plan includes 20 document generations per month. The counter appears on the Generate Document button. If you need more, upgrade to Professional.

Step 6: Monitoring and Scanning

AICompliant continuously monitors the regulatory landscape for changes that affect your business.

What the Scanner Does

The regulatory scanner checks 17 sources including:

  • LegiScan — State legislature bill tracking
  • Congress.gov — Federal AI bills
  • Federal Register — Agency rulemaking
  • Brookings Institution — AI policy analysis
  • UK AISI, Canada, Singapore, EU — International frameworks

When the scanner detects a new regulation or change to an existing one, it:

  1. Creates a regulatory change record
  2. Evaluates whether it affects your organization
  3. If applicable, updates your regulation mappings and generates new tasks

Autopilot

The Autopilot feature runs compliance scans on a schedule. On the Starter Plan, autopilot runs every 6 hours. It checks for:

  • New regulations from scanner sources
  • Changes to existing regulations
  • Overdue tasks needing alerts
  • Compliance score changes

Why This Matters: The Business Case

Without AICompliant

  • A compliance team manually tracks 50+ state laws and federal regulations
  • Each new AI system requires weeks of legal review across every jurisdiction
  • Penalty exposure is unknown until an enforcement action arrives
  • Document preparation takes days per regulation per audit

With AICompliant

  • Regulations are automatically mapped in seconds during onboarding
  • Gap analysis identifies exactly what needs to change — no guessing
  • Penalty exposure is calculated in real-time with quantified dollar amounts
  • Compliance documents are generated in under 60 seconds
  • Regulatory changes are detected automatically and reflected in your tasks

Key Benefits

  1. Reduce compliance time by 80% — Automated gap analysis replaces manual legal review
  2. Quantified risk — Know your exact penalty exposure, not just "we might be at risk"
  3. Audit-ready documentation — Generate professional compliance documents with one click
  4. Stay ahead of new laws — Scanner monitors 17 sources so you are not surprised
  5. Prioritized action — Tasks are ranked by priority so you fix the biggest risks first

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does onboarding take?

About 5 minutes. Enter your company info, select states, add AI systems, and the compliance engine does the rest.

Why do I have so many tasks?

Each task represents one specific compliance gap. A single regulation can have 10-30 requirements, and each requirement is checked against each of your AI systems. 3 systems × 10 regulations × 5 requirements = 150 tasks. This is normal and expected.

Which tasks should I work on first?

Start with Critical and High priority tasks for Active (effective) regulations. These represent laws already in force with real penalties.

How is penalty exposure calculated?

AICompliant sums the maximum penalty per violation for each applicable regulation where you have incomplete compliance tasks. As you complete tasks, your effective exposure decreases.

Are the generated documents legally valid?

Generated documents are professional-quality drafts customized to your organization. They are marked as "AI-GENERATED DRAFT" and should be reviewed by your legal or compliance team before submission to regulators. Once reviewed, mark them as "Approved" in the Document Center.

What happens when a new regulation passes?

The scanner detects it automatically. If it applies to your organization, it will appear on your Regulations page and new compliance tasks will be generated. You will see an updated task count and potentially higher penalty exposure.

Can I add more AI systems later?

Yes. Go to AI Systems in the sidebar and click "Add System". After adding a system, run a new gap analysis from the dashboard to generate tasks for the new system.
